Introduction to what I do

I am a freelance science writer and editor with a passion for making science interesting and understandable. My speciality is in the life sciences, but I have a broad scientific knowledge, and can tackle a wide range of science and technology topics. I write and edit for both specialist and non-specialist audiences, and I also write popular science books. I am the Scientific Editor of the Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand (JRSNZ), the Editor of Marsden Fund Update and Royal Society Alert, and have previously worked as a university tutor in science communication.

Types of Writing

My writing and editing is varied, and includes newsletter articles, web content, press releases, books and book chapters, news stories, scientific articles, grant proposals, and educational materials.

Experience

I began freelancing whilst completing my PhD in science communication at the Australian National University. Since then, I have written and edited on a broad range of science topics, giving me the versatility to tackle a wide variety of issues. I also write popular science books, and am the author of Hunting the Double Helix (which is published in the US as The DNA Detectives).

Education

My BSc(Hons) in genetics and biochemistry helps me to understand scientific subjects and the scientific process, while my PhD in science communication helps me to write about them effectively.
